Walking in the Peace of God

When was the last time you had peace in your heart? By peace I mean freedom from stress, anxiety and worry and instead a sense of tranquility, calmness and joy. The Bible promises those who walk in the Lord will walk in peace (Gal 5:22, Phil 4:7).

How can we get this peace no matter what situation we might be going through? I just finished reading the book of Isaiah a few weeks ago and I came upon a verse packed with power!

Isaiah says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD God is an everlasting rock.” ^Isaiah 26:3-4

Wow. Do you see that? God keeps some people in perfect peace no matter what situation they are in. Whether it’s during finals weeks, family drama, work, deadlines, tragedy and transitions in life.

But how?

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you." Those whose minds are 'stayed' on the Lord. Isaiah is giving us a key here to have perfect peace in our hearts. We must keep our minds and hearts on God continuously. We must remember and declare who He is over our situation. Doesn’t this seem counterintuitive? For me, when I see things going wrong I have a tendency to want to take control. I look for ways to fix things. I begin to move in my flesh rather than in the Spirit. But Isaiah is telling in order to remain in peace; we must take our eyes off our situation and put our eyes on the Lord!

Secondly those who trust in the Lord will have perfect peace. "Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD God is an everlasting rock." What are you worried about right now? What is giving you anxiety right now? What relationship is making you anxious? Trace your anxiety and it is likely lead you to your idol. Whatever makes you worried and anxious will likely point to an idol you are putting above God.

Imagine a trail of smoke that leads to a fire. In the same way, a trail of anxiety will likely lead to an idol we are allowing to take over the peace of God. We must lay that idol down, repent and trust God! We must surrender the deepest desires of our heart to the Lord.

Trust that God is at work (Jn 5:17). Trust that God is in control (Rom 8:28). Trust that God does not allow anything to happen without His permission (Matt 10:29)! Our heavenly Father knows what He is doing and what is best for His children.

I pray that God will teach all of us how to walk in the supernatural peace of God. No matter what situation we might be facing, I pray that God’s peace surround us!

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD God is an everlasting rock.” ^Isaiah 26:3-4
